Sadly, play on Final’s Day was abandoned without a ball being bowled, despite the tireless efforts of all of the ground staff at Port Soif.

This meant that we had to go back to the group stages to crown the winner, and Mourant Ozannes, sitting top with 16 points, collect the GPL 2012 trophy to sit next to the 2011 vase in their cabinet. Worthy winners having only lost one game, Mourant Ozannes benefitted from picking up 4 bonus points from the Super Overs played after the full t20 encounters. Their closest rivals to the title, JT Giants, were only 1 point behind. Indeed JT Giants had won more games in the group stage, but their failure to dominate the 1 over eliminator’s as they had done the matches cost them dear.

Mourant Ozannes win GPL 2012

There is no doubt that everyone involved with GPL2012 would have preferred some sort of match to be played to provide a winner, but how events materialised did highlight the need for each of the Franchises to focus on every point available, in every competition they play – and lessons learned in the GPL will be heeded by those players in representative cricket.

As well as crowning the winners, GPL Finals day saw the completion of the Bucktrouts Dot Ball Challenge. Cenkos Centurions triumphed in a competition that rewarded boundaries scored off the bat and penalised dot balls and boundaries bowled. Cash was kindly donated by Bucktrouts to form a kitty, with Cenkos Centurions ending on £176, and BDO, JT Giants and Mourant Ozannes all well under £50, which Bucktrouts generously rounded up to £100.

The final awards of the day went to the best bowling, best bating and overall  Clydesdale Bank International Most Valuable Player.

Most Wickets

Mourant Ozannes’ Pierre Moody triumphed with 12 wickets, an economy of a fraction above a run a ball and best bowling of 3-20.

Most Runs

Cenkos Centurions Tim Ravenscroft scored 341 in only 231 balls, averaging 68 runs for his wicket.

Clydesdale Bank International MVP

Using the same performance system as used in the professional game, the most valuable player was Tim Ravenscroft. In no small part due the the bucket full of runs he scored, but he also turned his arm over, bowling 12 overs for only 78 runs, and taking the prized wicket of Mourant Ozannes’ pro Paul Franks.

After another successful GPL season, we need to wait 12 months before GPL3 hits our shores, and lets all hope for a better Summer next year!
